New computer parts!

    That motherboard is a generation old, and doesn't support PCI-e x16 3.0 that the Z77 board supports, I wouldn't buy that board off of your friend. Instead look at these two:

    @::1/128 using the included heatsink is a slap in the face to processors everywhere. I never trust them, they run very hot and bring down the lifetime of the CPU.

    16GB of RAM is nice and all, but you won't ever use 60% of it, I'd save the $40 if it were me but whatever floats your boat.
    The old MOBO might be a really good deal price wise; if it is I would go with that seeing as how there are plenty of GPUs that it supports that will do WAY more than he will likely need it to do in the next 4 years.

    @Brett no u. You could be right, though in my experience that's not been the case. I've had an Intel 920 overclocked from 2.6GHz to 3.4GHz using the include heat sink and have had no problems at all. Granted one example is not a trend.

    If this were me, I'd leave the CPU stock, get the cheap (but quick) 8GB of memory, and put that $70 not spent on a fan and excess memory towards a SSD or better GPU.

      Last I read, graphics cards weren't anywhere close to hitting the limit of PCIe 2.0 x16 bandwidth.

        The included heatsink are usually made in conjunction with the processor. Most of the reason people get aftermarket parts is because of the OC or the constant running of high intensive computation (i.e running all your games in DX11, recording and uploading to youtube, or 3D). My server which is always on and does extremely computational stuff uses stock heatsink. While my gaming PC uses aftermarket because of the case modification that helps me control the hardware.

        TLDR: If you can afford and have expandable money go for it, else your fine with stock but research the part and look at the reviews or comment from newegg. Also invest your money on other parts that may gradually improve your PC.

        You get about 1% performance increase with PCI-E 3 x16 over PCI-E 2 x16 on graphics cards. Which in most cases won't even be a full frame per second.

        These parts equal out to around 310$ without shipping / taxes added in. Aside from this budget I also have some $$ set aside for a Radeon HD 7870 (I think this is the card; buying it from a friend as well, just can't remember exact card name).

        @P@P@ If you crossfire and get defaulted to x8 then you do hit the limit, taking away 2-3% performance, but it's nice to futureproof is what I'm telling him. If he picked up the Z77 board, he wouldn't have to upgrade for 4-5 years. He could be using a graphics card 4 generations from now on that board, so it'd likely max out the PCIe 2.0 x16 limit.

        RAM is mostly personal preference, I'm a 16GB'er, some others don't mind staying near 8GB. I just like to have the extra breathing room.
