What are your favorite animes and why?

Discussion in TV Shows started by Brett, May 2, 2015

I've always watched Toonami and Adult Swim animes, but I've never really followed a set show. I'm looking to start watching a few, I just don't know where to start.

I was wondering, what are your guys' favorite animes (max. of 5) and why? What are they about? etc.

I have a reaaaaally hard time deciding my top best 5 animes so I'm just gonna go ahead and mention a few of the many animes I love. I'm gonna give pretty vague descriptions since I don't want to tell you too much, if you wish to know even more than what I written I've gone ahead and posted a link to each anime where you can read a more in-depth description of the plot, story & characters. I'll focus on telling you why you might want/don't want to watch each of them by telling you from personal experience.

      Ergo Proxy

The first time I ever heard of this one was as early as middle-school. It was one of the first animes I got to finish from start to the end. This show is definitely not for everyone, it's rather unique. It puts heavy focus on philosophy along with philosophical terms, with a few action scenes here and there. Psychology also plays a big part. As for the characters, they are rather interesting and memorable in their own ways, dealing with their lives differently from one and another. There are 3 main characters, whereas the story revolves around one of them. The story is very complex and I can tell you that I needed to watch the anime 3 times, from the first to the last episode in order to understand everything of the plot and the story. I seemed to discover new things I hadn't even thought about before. "Rather than focusing on what is happening, think more of why it's happening" is something that I came to learn watching Ergo Proxy. It is quite a refreshing anime to watch, being very different from most other shows. It is pretty dark-ish themed. Normally, I wouldn't like this type of anime however Ergo Proxy is definitely at my top 10 list anime of all time. As I mentioned before, it can be a hit or miss for some people. For me, it was spot-on. Highly recommended.

      Black Lagoon
      Season one: http://myanimelist.net/anime/889/Black_Lagoon
      Season two: http://myanimelist.net/anime/1519/Black_Lagoon:_The_Second_Barrage

Absolutely love this one. For me, it ties with Ergo Proxy. Most people I know like this one. It's focuses on the life of criminality, naturally following a heavily action-based story. Black Lagoon is an anime that has a pretty broad type of fanbase, meaning that there is a high chance that you'll like this one. Perhaps not completely fall in love with it, but at least likeable. There are multiple main characters in this one but it has a greater focus on two of them. Two characters I didn't like at the start, but as the show went on my mindset on both of them quickly changed. Action-packed scenes which seem supernatural even though the show seem to be realistic-ish. Character development that I myself loved. It has multiple seasons for you to watch. The reason why I found this anime so great and special is because you are following the "bad guys" just to realise that they might not be all that bad...As mentioned before, it ties with Ergo Proxy, indicating that Black Lagoon, as well, is in my top 10 favourite anime of all time.

      Cowboy Bebop

No information from me of this one. Among a lot of people, considered probably the best anime of all time. If that doesn't motivate you to at least check it out, I don't know what will. Personally I think it's great. Seriously, give this one a try.

      Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

The highest rated anime on myanimelist.net, for a reason. It's pretty damn good. I'd recommend this one to anyone looking for a good anime to watch in general, which is why I'm not gonna bother explaining what it is about. Apologies for that. Words can simply not describe how good this anime is.

Lastly, I'll post two school life animes that I deem both equals. They are both really good. I don't have time to make a short summary of what I think of them, but I encourage you to read each link I've posted to get a understanding of what they're about aside from school life. (That makes it 6 animes, I like to go one step beyond hue).

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. (Second season airing at this very moment!)
      Season one: http://myanimelist.net/anime/14813/Yahari_Ore_no_Seishun_Love_Comedy_wa_Machigatteiru.
      Season two: http://myanimelist.net/anime/23847/Yahari_Ore_no_Seishun_Love_Comedy_wa_Machigatteiru._Zoku

      Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo

As an ending note, I don't know if you are aware of this anime which is why I'm warning you now right away, DON'T WATCH THE ANIME "Boku no Pico". I am dead serious. It will fuck you up.

Go to either AP or MAL and use the advance searches/tags to find something that suites you, ex. Gay Horror. Just going off of what I assume you like, Akira is suppose to be a very good movie, as well Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in The Shell. You might even like Boku no Pico or School Days, I mean you are a raging homosexual. I can't help personally cause all I watch is kawaii desu agent058 goodness, which is just cancer don't ever watch it, save yourself.

The one with that Texan guy and his propane tanks.

King of The Memes I think it was called.

            No but seriously probably

Parasyte (due to the action + struggle the main character goes through is ridiculous). Aliens fall to earth and enter random people's heads, controlling them and modifying their brains except the main character where the alien gets stuck in his hand and literally becomes the hand forming a mutualistic relationship with him to survive)

Kuroko No Basuke (basketball anime with great plot involving the shadow of a great player finally having the chance to shine, there are 3 seasons all great so far)

Amagami SS (A romcom with a guy who has his heart broken by a girl on Christmas Eve vowing never to fall in love again until he meets 6 different girls, having scenarios with each one of them. They have ministories where the main character ends up with each one of them and details his life years after either in the 1st or 2nd season).

I just recently got back into anime. The first one I watched? Not reading about the premise first of course, like a moron. The Qwaser of Stigmata. I cannot unsee -.-

But I enjoyed a lot of the older animes Like School Rumble and The Familiar of Zero. I like funny, romance but I also enjoyed Soul Eater and Gintama.

Very thorough @Vicarious thanks for that. I'm most definitely going to add those to my list.

I was also recommended a handful or two by a friend today when I asked aboot it. What do you think aboot: InuYasha, Death Note, Bleach, One Piece, Deadman Wonderland, Kill la Kill, and Hellsing? Are any worth adding to the list?
                • May 2, 2013
lol the manga was good but god the last episodes felt likE they were made on the spot it was like what in the fuck IS THAT GIRL DOING WITH HER TITS!!!111ONE11!!!

Do you enjoy protagonists who suck and keep crying about their misery

Hellsing ultimate god yes it was good! inuyasha is one of those old and enjoyable animes. death note yes wus good coz light best light. one piece is like the best thing they ever made on earth if you can bear the bad drawings of the first seasons tho prepare yourself they have now 700 episodes of this thing, and thats why if you watch it get a filler guide on the internet and skip the fillers.
for bleach as well fuck fillers. kill la kill=tits, randomness the end is epic worth watching it through.

and one of my recommendations would be Tengen toppa guren lagann. its amazing! its similar to kill la kill but i do think its kind of better than klk in its own way! My drill is the drill that will pierce the heavens! as they like to say so much in dat show xD

Only person in this haven of villainy and scums to enjoy good old japanese animation with no monstrous skull to nose eyes.

Fist of the North Star because I got introduced when I use to be heavy on Destructoid forums. Also the Yatatatatata

                    via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUlFqL72iV0

Samurai Champloo because music and samurai goes great together
DragonBall Series because I don't know that's why

Also a very obscure anime made by Japan but voiced in french called "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" or in the actual french title "Les Mystérieuses Cités d'or". My favorite animation I have ever watched. Combined my love of History with my sultry mistress of Science.
The story is about finding the lost cities made of gold that possess technology far advanced then ours. Like a freaking Golden Condor that is all mechanical and bigger then a freaking Airbus and that runs on the Sun energy. Or a mechanical boat that use the Sun energy to not only get powered but FREAKING shoots LASER....This is all happening when Spain was trying to find alternate ways to India.

                    via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcH_ZTF6smY

I also realized that those shows aren't running anymore but I had my fun with them.

Miyazaki films are my number one pick. They bring you into a giant fantasy world.

Tri-gun is a long series that is pretty fun based on futuristic bounty hunting in a old west setting, much like Bebop.

Berserk is a fairly short series with a pretty cool story line if you like medieval wars, kind of a game of thrones feel to it.

Battle angel Alita is a cool film based off an amazing manga series, unfortunately it leaves you guessing and would be good with a sequel to it unless you know how it ends from the manga.

Gundam 08th MS team is a real good gundam series, with a little more adult feeling to it.

Stay away from the stuff made after 2000~ because all the anime made after then basically sucks giant dick due to the CGI takeover. Personally I think CGI ruined anime.

A lot of the films like Appleseed and such from late 80's to late 90's is the best stuff in my opinion, especially since they drew everything.

I'm sure you've seen Akira, but if you haven't that's considered the best animation of all time.

My personal favorite movie in the anime category is a film called Nausicca and the Valley of The Wind, my miyazaki/studio gibli.

There are some movies that break the mold after 2000 but it's rare to find anything that isn't just flooded with CGI, for instance Blood: The last Vampire but the sequels to it are crap.

A very long series called Yu-Yu Hakusho is also really cool and will keep you entertained with like 60-80 episodes of well drawn artwork and action packed story.

There is a lot of good stuff on youtube if you search well enough.

I almost forgot, Jin-Rof: The Wolf Brigade is a pretty famous movie/series that has some really cool costumes.

InuYasha - This was before my time. I haven't watched it myself, and the only reason for that is because the old animation of it bothered me. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't watch it either though. I have yet to see or hear any of my friends complain about anything regarding InuYasha. It will most certainly be worth your time if you don't mind the animation.

Death Note - I tend to stay away from the ones who are well known and instead explore more of the unknown, which is why I have yet to watch this one either. From what I've heard, it's pretty damn good so that's all I can give you.

One Piece - One of the "mainstream" animes. I am not up-to-date, so I can't judge One Piece thoroughly but it's definitely a good watch, it was one of the animes I first watched. Just know that there are A LOT of episodes to watch.

Bleach - I watched the 60 first episodes, I regret nothing. However, something happened after those episodes that made me stop watching the show all together. Don't know what. I'm not the only one who dropped after those 60-ish episodes. I'd still recommend you to check it out, see if it's to your liking.

Deadman Wonderland - I'd say it's worth a try. I don't know how well the anime follows the manga since I never watched the anime. I thought it was pretty good, perhaps a slightly annoying main character.

Kill la Kill - I only started to watch this recently. It has a lot of comedic purposes and quite a few fanservices, something that has yet to bother me. I think the anime is hilarious and definitely worth watching, even for the comedy alone.

Hellsing - Do you like action? Supernatural beings? Extremely powerful main character? A lot of action scenes? Gore? Watch this.

Are we talking about shitty dubs or subtitles? It really matters because some dubs are better than the original voices. Granted, that is pretty rare. Haha.
                      • Dec 6, 2011
Hm, yeah I used to watch InuYasha, One Piece and Bleach quite a bit late at night, but they were dubbed so I don't really remember how poor the quality was.

What about filler episodes for the shows you listed? Are there quite a bit? Are they worth watching or should they be skipped through?

                        • Darker Than Black (Season 1) - Amazing series with lots of action and interesting characters.
                        • Rurouni Kenshin - Incredible OVA, anime series and terrible post-release OVA (but luckily non-canon). The OVA has 4 episodes, the anime 95 and the last one has superb anime but it's terrible considering how the original author wanted the ending to be like the Manga story-wise (which the author of that OVA didn't respect).
                        • Avatar The Last Airbender - Fantastic story, character development to the highest level and insane action. The animations of the fighting moves are just over the top beautiful. Might be too 'childish' depending on your age, but then there's Avatar Korra to folllow a more mature audience.
                        • Avatar Korra - Great. All the same as The Last Airbender but they screwed season 2 and 4. 1 and 3 are amazing.
                        • Mnemosyne - Great and a little bit twisted anime series with a cool plot. Has erotical passages in it (for a mature audience) but it's nothing porn-like.
                        • Ergo Proxy - One of the most twisted anime series I've ever seen. I swear at the first 6 episodes and even later down the road you'll not understand a fucking thing about what happens, but it will fall together. You might actually understand the ending if you have an IQ of 200+. I needed to search up an explanation but even then it's worth the mystery and discovery of what's happening.
                        • Black Lagoon - Also one of my favorites, it has a lot of badass action and great character development that keeps you entertained. Unfortunatly it's short and more or less not 'finished'. I feel like it requires another season but it's likely to never come.
                        • Basilisk - This one is great. It has all sorts of special characters and good action, however it's like Romeo and Julliet and if you didn't like that movie, don't bother. It has a great ending yet unsatisfying and completely unnecessary. It is great because it's exactly so consistent with the story, but it could have turned out in a more interesting way than carbon copy Romeo and Julliet.
There are more, but those I can recommend for sure.

Homestly, chances are low that my taste is the exact same as yours so I'd say that you should decide if they're worth your time once they come around. I watched all fillers but wasn't that entertained by any of them. I guess the only reason I watched them was in fear of missing something important to the plot. But then again, they're called fillers for a reason.

I second the already posted animes such as:
                          Ghost in the Shell
                          Rurouni Kenshin + OVA
Darker Than Black, just stay away from the second season. Not worth your time.

Pretty versatile list and they're all great, props to @Dirtbag and @JorisCeoen.
