i just spent 1800 on a custom acer laptop, so far what i have and put in it is an: intel core i7 975 prosseser, 750gb hardrive, has 8gs of ram, a Sapphire Radeon HD 5970, and i have other bad ass ones, cant remember what mother board i have in it, but its a really bad ass laptop and made a sweet deal...should be 3 times as much, but theres the basic read out on it, it also as an 18inch screen, with built in cam and mic, it came with a free ati radeon 5650.

ive been gaming for almost 15ish years, and i have a good read out on stuffto get, and ive used alienware in the past, and hate there shit........GO CUSTOM and BUILD YOUR OWN FOR HALF OR MORE THEN THE ATOP NOATCH GAMING COMANYS CHARGE,

i also put 6k into a bad ass gaming rig ive built

I'm not saying it's not, It's a bad ass laptop. I just have never really fancied playing games on a laptop is all. It feels constrictive with the keyboard and monitor layout always being defined in the same relative position. That and heat usually ends up being an issue.

Some laptops come with a full keyboard and then some.

I don't like laptops because you can't upgrade them

Well yeah, mine has a full number pad on it, but I like my keyboard separate from my screen personally, but perhaps that's a unique grievance. The thing about a gaming laptops is that a good one, like OPs, have a few redundancies that, for me, are damning to the concept of both laptops and gaming. For instance, the power demands on a laptop like that will most likely require you to either constantly plug in and unplug your laptop, or leave your laptop plugged in (which of course kills the battery, nullifying the idea of portability). Also it's a huge laptop, smaller than a gaming desktop yes, but as a laptop it is kinda fat. Also I'm not confident it is cheaper, I believe a comparable desktop will most always work out cheaper.

I bought my gaming laptop for use at work. I spent a bit of money to make my job, which takes up a huge portion of my life, fun instead of dreadfully boring. I've never heard of someone buying a mac for gaming, also macs are awesome.

Momo you lazy fuck how about you actually work at work. But unless its a special case like yours (everything about you is always oh so special) gaming laptops are retarded for many reasons.

-More expensive than their desktop equivalents
    -Much less upgradable
    -Don't overclock for shit
    -Overheat
    -Cant have awesome monitor setups
    -etc.

The reason i compared a gaming laptop to a mac is because they are also overpriced, hardly upgradable, for the most part they are made from actual laptop parts, and whenever someone mentions they use either of those for gaming i don't know if i should laugh or feel bad for them.

well ive been gaming for a really long time, started out on the saga gen, then n64 back in the day, i always liked the idea of a mobile power house for gaming, and yeah i like gaming on the go, i took an alianware laptop on a tour in iraq once, it was nar,...in the mornings i sometimes take my laptoip to starbucks for a cup of coffie and game a bit while i eat, and yeah your cant upgrade them much, but if you find somthing your like and is better you can always add it in. and its all cool each to his own, laptops have a lot of protencle in them, i have a buddy who works at a school in computer tech and repares for the school, hes been gaming for 24 years, tought me a lot, and keeps telling me laptops will be really great for gaming in a couple years, personaly i think there really good atm, if you know what to look for.

Laptops become outdated, then trashed. #1 reason for a laptop is for jobs and school, gaming is only temporary before they become obsolete.

Their cooling hardware is mediocre at best for any laptop. They have to fit a cooling fan 80% smaller than a normal CPU cooler and gaming on it will stress out hardware.

You CANNOT change graphics drivers or processors for laptops, they are built into the laptop's chipset. only thing you can really change is the RAM, and that barely factors into gaming.

You're wasting your money on a gaming laptop.

-no such thing as "mobile powerhouse"
-if your friend works AT the school hes a level 1 tech which means hes the equivalent of the guys who stand behind the counter at geek squad. I know this because i work for a school district as well except im a tech 2 feeder area technician with tech 3 responsibilities to boot... they just dont want to pay me tech 3 salary.
-If you think they are really good at the moment please provide a link to any laptop and i will show you something better and cheaper
-gaming does not give you any computer skills. Its like saying ive had a phone most of my life so i know exactly how it works and how its programed. No you just know how to use it.
-It doesn't matter what you look for if its not there you wont find it.
-If your friend keeps telling you laptops will be great for gaming in a couple of years he doesn't know what hes talking about because they will ALWAYS be inferior to desktops. There are many reasons this will never change and I can list them off if you'd like.

Not once in this thread have I seen someone say anything about laptops being better than desktops >.> That doesn't mean laptops aren't good, or aren't getting better.

not at all momo, but they have there uses, gaming isn't one of them.

can they be used for gaming, can they be on par with a desktop OF COURSE

but not for long term, which makes them shitty for gaming. unless you don't mind paying 1800-2000$ every 3 years for a laptop

when you can spend 200-500$ on desktop PC upgrades in that time span

i Know no one is talking about desktops im just saying that for "gaming: you cant logically choose laptops over desktops, thus all the desktop related arguments. And you are correct laptops are getting better, but that doesn't change the basic flaws they have as laptops that cannot be changed. Laptops have many uses, gaming is not one of them, and if you are going to use it for gaming prepare to pay more and get less is what im trying to get across. Plus pretty much all the things that are improved in laptops are just downgraded spinoffs of desktop improvements.

Yet another moot point, of course a gaming laptop wont last as long as a desktop, no one would say any different...

It's like you guys are arguing with yourselves.

I don't really mind throwing money at problems as long as it fixes them.

I understand momo. But in my opinion buying a gaming laptop especially if you already have a 6k tower is absolutely dumb... and thats coming from a guy who drives a benz and and drops hundreds of dollars a week on random shit. And if you are somebody that dosent have money to throw around and are still buying a gaming laptop, thats walking the line between dumb and straight up retarded.
