Rather keep the spectre but seriously, we need to do something to increase the skin size limit because most of the good skins are more than 1 mb (eg. Fallout 3 tesla armor, slenderman, daedra, master chief, tidus, and cloud).

You're wasting your time if you're suggesting skins that don't have a small file size (the one fluffeh posted above is 6.24 MB uncompressed - far too big). We will not add large skins to the servers. Delete CSS, reinstall, and try to join ZE or ZM and see how long it takes to download everything. It should be fairly quick given the skins on our servers are currently a few hundred KB in size (uncompressed). Say there's 10 skins to download. Each skin is 500 kb. That's 5 MB of data one has to download for 10 skins. That's 1.24MB less than the one skin that was posted above. Now imagine if all 10 skins were 5 MB. That's 50 MB of total data, a 900% increase, 10 times the amount of data versus the 500 kb skins.

Depending on your internet connection and proximity to our fast download server, the time it would take to join our server just based on skin downloads alone would be as follows:

      5 MB @ 56 Kbps - 11 mins, 54 seconds.
      50 MB @ 56 Kbps - 1 hour, 59 minutes, 2 seconds.

      5 MB @ 512 Kbps - 1 minute, 18 seconds.
      50 MB @ 512 Kbps - 13 minutes, 1 second.

      5 MB @ 1.024 Mbps - 39 seconds.
      50 MB @ 1.024 Mbps - 6 minutes, 30 seconds.

      5 MB @ 2.048 Mbps - 19 seconds.
      50 MB @ 2.048 Mbps - 3 minutes, 15 seconds.

      5 MB @ 10 Mbps - 4 seconds.
      50 MB @ 10 Mbps - 40 seconds.

      5 MB @ 25.6 Mbps - 1 second.
      50 MB @ 25.6 Mbps - 15 seconds.

      5 MB @ 51 Mbps - 0 seconds (value is in milliseconds).
      50 MB @ 51 Mbps - 7 seconds.

      5 MB @ 100 Mbps - 0 seconds (value is in milliseconds).
      50 MB @ 100 Mbps - 4 seconds.

For those who don't have very fast connections and/or are far away from the fast download server, their join times will increase quite a bit, to the point where they might grow tired of waiting and hit cancel. It's especially important for new players to be able to join our servers in a timely manner. I do believe our strict standing on this over the years has attributed to gaining more new players. I know for a fact whenever I join a new server and all I'm hit with is a long download queue, albeit skins, trails, whatever, I almost always end up hitting cancel.

So again, if you want new skins on the servers, they need to be a reasonable file size, otherwise forget it.

Apparently there's a way to convert client side skins to server side skins. I'll take a look at the process and see what I can come up with, and even if they can be clipped into smaller files.

A client side skin is named for example: gign.mdl, sas.mdl, urban.mdl

A server-sided has every name possible.

You need to decompile, rename, and recompile to convert the skin.

Not is good only think about the size of the 'model' files, although, well, the materials/textures tend to be those who put 80% of the size.

Also would be good, think about the mesh of the model, how many vertices and triangles have.

I know, when a model is set to many people, and this has many vertices, the server produces several important problems with the FPS.

            Here a img, compare.

So... who puts this model on a server is completely crazy and is an unconscious, because this model makes charging as 7 players with CTGIGN model...

This model of lara croft (for example) needs an optimization, if you think a little.

I recommend always one model with less than 4000 vertices...

The lotr should be good for an event.
The models are not very big, except the Balrog and the Troll.

The rayman is good but wouldn't fit well on pF.
                  Bender same.

Between, I found a Lucario skin, starfox pack, and sonic from ssbb. All server-sided.

                  And a glitched Link model
