Huge thanks to @Tony The Tiger and @Joshy for their help getting this going, and to everyone who helped with the initial playtesting.
You guys better not kill me I want to get some XP too!! I am super stoked to see this server finally realized. Thanks for making it happen guys!
I regret to inform you guys that Joshy and Brian have been banned from the server due to having too high skills and levels.
I hope my posts merge. I apologize in advance if it doesn't. A great way to help a server out if you are away is to sit in afk. Surf is just one of those servers that can be fun with 1 ~ 2 people with the surf, and even more fun when there's a crowd for the DM component. Having anyone online, even if they are afk, can still attract people to the server and inflate its on some sites; this can be attractive for some players and genuinely attract a population. Also: Since the server is in beta... it's really difficult to find those sweet spots so far as what each stat/rpg level should do and how the server should feel when you play. It's not like ZM where a lot of people can wing it by sitting in a cade. If there's something you don't like the gravity or acceleration, then be sure to say something about it it'll honestly be more helpful as the things are being tuned. Was on for a while tonight and I definitely had a blast- I plan to post a few pics and videos.
Wow, my English has really deteriorate missing words like "rank" after the phrase "server and inflate its", and "such as" after the phrase "something you don't like." I'm sure there are a dozen more errors in that post and this one, and it's 2 am (now), but I wanted to say something so that it didn't sound completely whacked.
I passed all of you boys in a few hours (rank whore detected full kappa mode), better get in and show me who da real boss is!
Absolutely great you guys started a Surf RPG server! By far my favorite game at the moment, have been playing it a lot on a European server the last few years. Unfortunately, the high ping I have on the server (100ms average, The Netherlands) is not helping for me. Surf RPG is a very fast game, and requires a low ping to play it well imo. That being said, I like the way you organized the server and the RPG plugin you picked. Some pointers based on my experiences I picked up playing Surf RPG for more hours than I'd like to admit - Stats (GameME) and RPG are not a good combination imo. It will encourage players to run when HP gets low, in an attempt to preserve their GameME rank. There is already a points system with RPG, that's RPG itself - A few starting credits would be cool. Just joined when the server was empty, unable to buy anything because I couldn't get any kills. Just around 50 credits for example could be a great way to onboard new players and keep them around - Don't know how SM:RPG handles ice stab exactly, but if you can shoot a player while he's iced, it will cause irritations. Guess that's a choice you make as server owner whether you want that or not - As for the maps, go for quality not quantity. IMO, surf rpg is about the battles and not about the surfing. Maps that consist of mostly surfing and don't have enough places to fight or maps that are too big (making it hard to find the enemy players), can clear a server very fast - What is the max HP? I'm currently used to 1000 hp max. Seems absurd, I know. But it makes for a hell of a fight (awp vs awp, or my personal favorite: ak (me) vs awp) especially when you also have vampire maxed (adds 100% of the damage you do to other players to your own HP) - For the long term: think about a max RPG lvl or global reset of the levels. In the past I played on a server that reset you level automatically when you reached lvl 1000. I'm now used to a server that doesn't reset. Some players have lvl 4400, everything maxed. That does get boring fast, especially when only low levels are playing. - Doing a global reset of the levels will annoy the living hell out of the regulars of course. But the even playing field makes the gameplay a lot of fun right after the global reset - Players will want to do 1 on 1 battles (awp / deagle mostly), this can cause arguments when they get 'interrupted'. My personal take on this: CS:S is team vs team, not 1 on 1. The big fights with many players can be a lot of fun, especially in cramped places. Find a secluded spot in the map to do the 1 on 1 if you want to do that, but don't start flaming when somebody interrupts. Interrupting on purpose is also a dick move of course. The essence: don't be a dick - M249 and dual elites are very over powered guns, especially elites when combined with high frost pistol lvl - Add surf_buzzkill2 and surf_machine4_sky_v3 --> excellent maps, lots of room to have fights (office in machine4 is a lot of fun with a big group of players)
Perhaps that opens up the idea to a new feature/plugin. Like, you could do !challenge tony or !1v1 tony, and it will give you a Deagle and Awp. It will beacon both of you, and nobody else can hurt you. You get 45 seconds to kill each other, then the 1v1 is over and everyone can kill you again.
I like the idea. Perhaps the reward can be stealing another players xp but I see an issue, (Maybe) It would need some sort of cooldown or a player can just use a bind to trigger it when they know they are about to die by another player.
Also, the round restarts when all players of a team are dead. That should be disabled when running a DM server (edit: believe this is the command: mp_ignore_round_win_conditions "1" ) Personally I think the yellow glow AND sound when leveling up is a but much, can I disable the yellow glow? Just having the ping sound would be fine imo
Idk how that works or if it's possible. I've been on many servers where there are few players and a whole team gets downed by a nade, at the same time and it ends. Regardless of DM.
HP regeneration is not available as skill, any particular reason behind this? Would love to see it added! When you buy a skill through the menu, a small feedback sound when you buy it would improve the UX One more thing, when I joined today there was a zm map on. Can't see it in the nominate list, but for obvious reasons that doesn't seem the best map to have on the server!
Thanks for all the feedback @Hek! Unfortunately this breaks a plugin that forces maps to change once the timelimit is up. You can disable the flash in rpg settings. Added.
That's too bad, but I really recommend looking for a different solution for the map changing then. When 2 players are online, it will keep doing the "round draw" / round restart, very annoying. Besides that, I think the map changing is not really working. Should it change maps regardless of whether people are playing? Just joined an empty server, another player (2nd player in the server) joined a team, round restarts, map changes. Perhaps this is something to tool at? https://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?p=734701 It's also good to think about jail protection, as it can become quite irritating for players who are a lot in jail if they are getting killed all the time from outside jail. This is a tricky one though, not all jails on all maps should have protection, and every jail has to be calibrated manually. This looks like an up-to-date solution for the jail protection: https://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?p=2023591 + https://github.com/Franc1sco/DevZones/tree/master/Third-party plugins/DevZones_Jail
As far as I'm aware, when the situation occurs from two players joining the server and the map changing is simply because the map has been in play for longer than the allotted time span, it normally would be. It's more like an auto rtv waiting to refresh itself. However, I could be wrong. On the topic of jail protection, that has a downside. What happens when you have 3/4 high level players camping jail waiting for lower level players (Already at a disadvantage) that aren't good at surfing and always seems to find themselves in jail just getting roasted over and over. This is simply fixed by other players knowing they are camping jail and just going on the outside and securing the zone that way. One idea your "Jail Protection" could work is more of a map idea. What if there were teleports that brought players to an arena based place with "Jail Protection"? Having no actual jail protection as annoying as it may seem at first, is a way to balance it. It's a give and take thing. If one person is on the outside of the wall, they are free game for a sniper. "Jail Protection" encourages spawn campers. Have you ever played DM Crackhouse when everyone just uses an awp? I know I have.
The maps don't constantly cycle. If you look at the stats page for the server, you'll see long lulls where it stays on a map (http://stats.plaguefest.com/css4). When 2 people join, the map timer is already at 0:00. So once a person joins each team, the server basically thinks "okay map is over now." and goes to the next map that is queued. Jail protection I'm not really for, it can change the flow of gameplay a bit if people are then forced to go into jail to kill those in jail, or are required to have the jail open for them. I think it kind of incentivizes people to get better at surfing to avoid getting stuck in jail.
