I bought a new computer last summer which I thought was gonna kick ass, but I'm not getting the performance i thought i would get. heres the specs and i havent overclocked anything
    core i7-930 2.8 GHz
    9 GB DDR3 RAM
    radeon 5850 with 1 GB ddr5
    1.5 TB hard drive
    850 watt psu
I get 60 fps consistently in css with everything maxed out and multi core rendering turned on, but i see bench marks of i7 systems with the 5850 getting around 150 fps. it plays well, but i should be getting a higher fps
    any help would be appreciated

Turn off VSync in your CS:S video options. You will get better frame rates but you may notice screen tearing.

you are getting more fps than your eye can detect... so you are not missing anything actually...

i know the human eye can only detect up to about 20fps but it will notice a difference up to around 200 hz i think.

thanks for the vsync tip, now im getting 150 fps.

9GB of RAM? You know that's gonna burn out your RAM like a mofo sooner or later and you're gonna end up spending a shit ton of money to replace the same stick over and over. You need to pair your RAM.

30 fps, and yeah. I get about 225 usually. That was probably your problem but really CS:S is an older game. It's not gonna really hurt anything.

the core i7-9xx processors use triple channel ram so it wont burn anything out. the high end sandy bridge processors that are scheduled to come out Q4 of this year will support quad channel ram and 20MB L3 caches.

i7's generate a shitload of heat when under stress. Especially with the stock POS coolers they come with.

Its a good thing they're difficult to stress then

It's not just the i7's. It's any enthusiast-level CPU which has a higher TDP output.

Well css is more of a cpu reliant platform so get your self a nice aftermarket cooler and get that i7 up to 4ghz and you will see some better frames. Your cpu is fast at stock but if you want to pull as much as you can from your gpu you need to overclock.

I setup my desktop about couple months ago.

      i7 950 /w Corsair H70 water cooler.
      12GB(1600MHz)
      80SSD, 3 x 500GB raid 0
but old graphic card of Radeon 5750 1GB

Runs pretty smooth and quiet and avg temp for CPU is 30~35 normally even when playing games.

Only one thing that I feel bad is that I bought these computer parts when Sandy was recalled. If not, I would've gotten Sandy. :frown:

But yea, I realized that this CPU also requires triple memories.

Well when running net_graph 3 display I get around 150-190fps @ 2560x1600 with everything maxed out. I have vsync off too and that takes it from 60 fps to the 150-190fps. Now those frames are on idle, when 56 players are on it drops to 40-75fps. One thing that I have seen put a strain is AV products causing drag on the system. Make sure you exclude your steam directory from your AV if you are running one and give it a spin.
